Sarangani celebrates business month

By BEVERLY C. PAOYON

MAITUM, Sarangani (July 11, 2011) – The annual celebration of provincial business month in Sarangani partners the seven component municipalities in taking concrete steps in moving MSME development activities and policy measures forward with “USWAG Goes To Town.”

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) opened here the business month celebration in Sarangani on July 6 with its localized version of the national Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise (MSME) week.

The celebration, dubbed as United towards a Strong, Wealthy And Globally competitive Sarangani (USWAG), is an adaptation of the MSME development week held every second week of July which Sarangani expanded into a month-long activity.

USWAG, already on its 7th year, is backed by Sangguniang Panlalawigan Resolution 2006-5-053 “adopting USWAG as a socio-economic activity in Sarangani Province,” DTI provincial director Engr. Nenita Barroso said.

Barroso said this year’s event is a “continuing advocacy to partner component municipalities in taking concrete steps in moving MSME policy measures forward.”

In the towns, USWAG would showcase techno-demo sessions, skills training, entrepreneur’s seminar, market matching, consultations and project launching.

The schedules are: Kiamba – July 11; Malungon – July 13; Alabel – July 15; Malapatan – July 18; Glan – July 20; and Maasim – July 22.

This year, Maitum hosted the opening salvo where DTI also launched USWAG Goes To Town.

Governor Migs Dominguez advocated entrepreneurship emphasizing only two things students should choose to do after they graduated. “Either to engage into business or to be employed in private of government entity,” he said.

Dominguez said the role of government is to encourage entrepreneurship because it is not good that all products being sold here were still being bought from Manila, Cebu, US, or China, while local products were being neglected.

Vice governor Steve Chiongbian Solon also urged interested individuals “to take advantage of this month to learn on the trainings DTI is offering” while government creates enabling measures to start or to boost up businesses.

Meanwhile, Maitum Mayor Elsie Perrett said her town continues to live up to its name as a “business-friendly municipality” in which investments are poured in for infrastructure development like road networks, market, water systems, and post harvest facilities.
