MV Double Prosperity ruins corals, might flee
SARANGANI (July 12, 2011) – The Panamanian-registered vessel MV Double Prosperity, owned by Tanagra Shipping S.A. and Pacific Carriers LTD, Singapore, and managed by Yano Kaiun Co., LTD, is stuck at Bakud Reef in this photo taken on May 11, three days after the vessel ran aground Bacud Reef. Salvaging operations that refloated the vessel ruined almost a hectare of corals, or an area four times the initial damage. MV Double Prosperity was pulled out by Malayan Towage & Salvage Corporation on June 11 after at least 11 attempts to refloat it, and was brought to Bunawan, Davao City, under the custody of the Philippine Coast Guard. The vast new damage is attributed to the salvage operations of the towage company because instead of merely pulling the vessel out, they moved the boat on all directions until they dragged it to the deeper portion of the reef, which caused more damage to the area of the reef. The salvage company has demanded for the transfer of the vessel from Bunawan, Davao City to Malalag, Davao del Sur for repair, and act which the Sarangani legal team said would pave the way for the vessel to leave the Philippine jurisdiction.
