By BEVERLY C PAOYON
GLAN, Sarangani (October 9, 2012) – Vice President Jejomar Binay has hailed the Lubi-lubi Festival for keeping the Filipino culture alive.
In a message delivered by his daughter Nancy Binay during the foundation day program on Monday (October 8), the Vice President recognized Lubi-lubi Festival as “patunay sa inyong pagtulong sa layunin ng ating pamahalaan na mapangalagaan ang kulturang Pilipino at mapanatiling buhay ang ibang makukulay at mayayamang tradisyon natin. (This festival affirms that you are helping the nation in keeping the Filipino culture alive along with our colorful and rich traditions.) ”
As Glan would be celebrating its centennial anniversary in 2014, Binay said Glan has succeeded in keeping a tradition “to preserve their culture” which he cited as“worth emulating by Filipinos.”
Binay likewise noted the occasion to support President Aquino’s program on the “sustainable use of natural resources for the benefit of future generations”.
Anchored on the theme, “Nurturing History Through Cultural Advancement,” the Lubi-lubi Festival this year was commemorated to pay tribute to the forebears of Glan 98 years ago.
This is the 13th year celebration of the Lubi-lubi Festival which also marked the 98th founding anniversary of the town.
Former Senator Ernesto Maceda, Zambales Congresswoman Milagros “Mitos” Magsaysay and former Tarlac Governor Tingting Cojuangco also graced the occasion.
On his part, Governor Migs Dominguez stressed the importance of “responsibility” of the new generation in keeping the town’s tradition alive “upang hindi masasayang ang pagod, ang hirap nila at lahat ng sakrispisyo na binigay ng ating mga ninuno para sa bayan ng Glan.”
Mayor Victor James “Tata” Yap Sr. hoped his constituents could “follow the footsteps of our forebears who blazed the trail and brought forth this beautiful land.”
Glan was formerly an agricultural colony no. 9 in 1913 before it was established into a municipality a year after on October 8, 1914.
Meanwhile, the annually anticipated street dance in multihued coco-inspired costumes highlighted the Lubi-lubi Festival.
Lubi-lubi street dance is the residents’ invaluable manifestation of reminiscing the heritage and culture embedded from the abundance of life the coconut trees afforded to the people of Glan.
Notre Dame of Glan bested other three contingents in this year’s street dance with best performer and best accompaniment awards. Pangyan National High School, Padidu National High School and Sultan Kudarat State University ranked first, second and third runners up, respectively.
