Mayor Yap pays tribute to Glan “Kolonos”

GLAN, Sarangani (October 8, 2012) — Mayor Victor James Yap, Sr. on Monday (October 8) cited the town’s founding fathers whose sacrifices tell of the saga of how this town came about almost a hundred years ago.
“Ninety eight years ago today, our founding fathers… from the Visayas braved the seas and a future fraught with peril and uncertainty to establish the first settlement in this part of the Archipelago,” said Mayor Yap at the “star-studded” 98th Foundation Anniversary celebration at the jam-packed Atty. Enrique D. Yap, Sr. Cultural Center.
Among the luminaries in attendance were Gov. Migs Dominguez and four of the United Nationalist Alliance (UNA) senatorial bets — former Sen. Ernesto Maceda, former Tarlac Gov. Tingting Cojuangco, Zambales Congresswoman Mitos Magsaysay, and Nancy Binay, daughter of Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Monday’s foundation anniversary harks back to the Commonwealth era then under Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison when Agricultural Colony No. 9, headed by Don Tranquilino Ruiz of Alegria, Cebu was established here.
On October 8, 1914, Don Tranquilino and the first batch of 16 families, or “Kolonos”, landed on the shores of what would become the first full-fledged municipality in Central Mindanao, the Coconut Queen of the South and now the tourism hub ofSarangani province. One of the Philippines’ best beaches, Gumasa, is in Glan.
“We look back to our past and we come out renewed with fresh hope and confidence that many more of our people can follow in the footsteps of our forebears who blazed the trail and brought forth this beautiful land we now fondly call ‘Glan,’” the mayor said.
He said everyone has the duty to help keep the pioneering spirit alive in line with this year’s theme, “Nurturing History and the Environment through Cultural Advancement.”
“Kay pinaagi sa pagpalambo sa atong kultura, ato usab mapalambo ang atong kaugalingong kinabuhi ilawom sa demokrasyang panggobierno, sa pinagtabangay sa matag-usa ug, labi na sa tanan, ang hingpit nga pagtuo sa Diyos nga Makakagahom,” he said.
The mayor called on his townspeople to remain united, because it is only through unity that the town can continue to move forward as envisioned by the founding fathers who overcame formidable odds and laid the groundwork for what Glan is today.
“Padayon and atong pagtambayayong ug tinabangay haron sa ingon niana padayon ang atong paguswag ug atong matuman ang mga pangandoy sa atong mga katiguwangan nga gisud-ong ang tumang kalisod sa ilang laraw nga mahatagan kitang tanan ug maayong kaugmaon,” Mayor Yap said.
He also commended the organizers and members of Global Glanians in Dubai, where many of his constituents are now gainfully employed and also celebrating the town’s 98th Anniversary Foundation on October 8.
