Sarangani opens Consumer Welfare Month celebration

ALABEL, Sarangani (October 9, 2013) – The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI-Sarangani) has lined-up activities for the month-long celebration of the Consumer Welfare Month for October 2013, which commenced during the flag-raising ceremony at the Capitol Monday (October 7).

Engr. Nenita Barroso, DTI provincial director, said that DTI will be conducting different trainings and seminars to educate consumers.

This year’s theme, “Health Products – Quality, Efficacy, Safety and Transparency – Everybody’s Concern”, aims to enhance awareness on consumers’ rights and privileges in availing products which affect the consumers’ fitness and well-being.

“We will have a seminar on food licensing sa mga gustong magpa-register, this will be conducted for free on October 18, at the Family Country Hotel. We will also have a Consumer Education and Information Seminar on October 22-23 in Maitum and in Kiamba,” Barroso said.

DTI will also conduct a surprise visit and joint inspection and provincial enforcement within the province for businesses using weighing scales.

On October 10, Barroso said selected high school students in the province will participate in the Provincial Consumer Quiz Bee. The winners will participate in the regional quiz bee. Last year, Sarangani Province placed second in the regional quiz bee competition.

Meanwhile, Rizalina Quiñanola, food and drug regulation officer II, of the Department of Health (DOH) Food and Drug Administration, asserted that consumers must be aware of the health products they buy in the market.

“Kailangan talagang siguraduhin kung legitimate ba o licensed yung outlet na binibilhan niyo, at dapat iche-check niyo yung expiry date. We, consumers should also be careful kung tampered ba o kung may sticker yung expiry date. Health products are consumable within the given period of time, wala na pong extension yan ng ilang buwan,” she explained.

She said that imported products should also be checked if it has a Philippine counterpart, otherwise, it is not licensed.

The opening of the Consumer Welfare Month started with a motorcade from Alabel municipality to the Capitol Compound. The motorcade was participated in by the Sarangani Consumer Welfare Council, personnel from Alabel PNP, Alabel National Science High School, National Food Authority, DOH, Landbank of the Philippines, the Provincial Government of Sarangani through the PENRO, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, Department of Interior and Local Government, and DTI.
