Officials rush aid to flashflood-hit villages

KIAMBA, Sarangani (August 27, 2014) – Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon, Mayor Raul Martinez, PDRRMO head Rene Punzalan, Office of Civil Defense Assistant Regional Director Jerome Barangco, Engr. Bobby Fantin of the Provincial Engineering Office, and barangay captains and officials discuss mitigation measures hours immediately after a flashflood hit some of the barangays in Kiamba at the municipal session hall on Tuesday, August 26. Barangays in Kiamba and Maasim were affected by heavy rains on Monday afternoon. It was agreed that barangays affected will declare a state of calamity as basis of the municipal government to declare the same to fasttrack the rehabilitation plan, including the provision of permanent relocation site to families living along riverbanks. Kiamba LGU, Sarangani Provincial Government and DPWH Sarangani promptly responded at the height of the flooding so that relief goods, river dredging, and dump truck deployment were initially offered to ensure the safest evacuation of the residents. No casualty was recorded. Damaged infrastructure and agri lands are still being accounted but it is estimated at millions of pesos considering the vast rice fields in MAKIMA towns. (Kim Windell V.
